About the event
Hurricane Helene was a devastating tropical cyclone that struck the Southeastern United States in late September 2024. It made landfall near Perry, Florida, as a Category 4 hurricane with 140 mph winds, marking the strongest storm to impact Florida's Big Bend region on record. The hurricane caused catastrophic storm surge, wind damage, and inland flooding across a wide swath of the South, resulting in at least 230 fatalities, making it the deadliest mainland hurricane since Katrina in 2005. The storm's extensive damage led to significant economic losses, with estimates ranging from $20 billion to $34 billion. In response, federal disaster assistance was made available to the affected states to support recovery efforts.
